Medial Patella Luxation (MPL) occurs when the kneecap (patella) slips out of its normal groove, usually towards the inside of the leg. This can cause pain, lameness, or difficulty walking. Surgery corrects the alignment of the kneecap and stabilizes the joint to restore normal movement and reduce the risk of arthritis. Depending on the severity, the surgeon may deepen the groove (trochleoplasty), realign tendons or adjust the bone positioning to keep the patella stable. The surgical plan is dependent on each individual dog’s condition.
